Guest Judge 2007
After some success in a fifteen year mission to climb the slippery pole that represents a career in advertising, Charles sold up in London and bought a ruined mansion in Buxton, Derbyshire. With his wife, Sylvia, he set about turning it into a luxury hotel and restaurant and took on the role of head chef. As interest rates doubled and the recession bit home, the only ray of sunshine was general acclaim for the food - unfortunately this was not enough to stop the enterprise failing. Charles then spent several years re-inventing himself as a food writer, he has written about small regional food producers for the Times and has written about restaurants in the London Evening Standard for over a decade. He has also written about food and restaurants for The Independent, The Weekend Telegraph, The Illustrated London News, BBC Good Food Magazine, Delicious, Bon Appetit in America, and the Times of India.... among other newspapers and magazines. He has appeared on Food and Drink - BBC2 – Foodfile on Channel 4, Hell’s Kitchen, Masterchef, and Celebrity Masterchef, plus co-hosting the series Greatest Dishes of the World on Sky during Spring 2005. He is a past winner of the Glenfiddich "Restaurant Writer of the Year" Award. He has written three cookery books with chef Theodore Kyriakou - The Livebait Cookbook (published by Hodder and Stoughton 1998 and by Soma Books in the USA); Real Greek Food (published by Pavilion, November 2000); and The Real Greek at Home (published by Mitchell Beazeley in May 2004). He has also written a culinary memoir called “Fifty Recipes to Stake Your Life On”, which was published by the Timewell Press in October 2004. A book of barbecue recipes called “Food from Fire” was published by Mitchell Beazley in June 2006. In addition (between 1999 and 2005) he wrote seven editions of the Rough Guide to London Restaurants. In April 2006 Profile Books published The London Restaurant Guide by Charles Campion . He is a regular judge at both the British Cheese Awards and the International Cheese Awards. He has judged food and drink products for various other National and International awards. He is on the Judging panel for the London Restaurant Awards. He has served on the committee of the Guild of Food Writers. He lives just outside Worcester with his wife, two extremely noisy children, four chickens, five ducks, two cats, and a dog.
