Sat Bains local background
Sat was born in Derby then moved to Nottingham when he was 21. He has learnt and practised his skills throughout the East Midlands since the age of 16. Due to this Sat has earned his status as arguably the East Midlands top chef when it comes to fine cuisine
The list of awards
- Winner of the Roux Scholarship in 1999
- Awarded a Michelin Star in 2003. This makes Restaurant Sat Bains with Rooms the only Michelin starred restaurant in Nottinghamshire
- 2006 sees the Restaurant achieving 7/10 in The Which Good Food Guide. The highest rated in Nottingham.
- In January 2006 Restaurant Sat Bains with rooms was awarded 4 AA rosettes for it’s innovative and unique style of cooking. The highest rated in Nottingham.
- The restaurant has just received the coveted Restaurant of the year for 2007 by the AA.
Career summary
“ I left school at sixteen, but hadn’t a clue what to do next. It was only after realising that taking a cookery course would help me meet lots of girls that I enrolled at the Wilmorton College in Derby. Finally, though, I became more passionate about the food-that’s when I knew that I definitely wanted to do this for a career.”
- After passing his City and Guilds, Sat got his big break when he became part of the team helping to open the first of Raymond Blanc’s brassieres, Le Petit Blanc in Oxford in 1996.
- A spell at L’Escargot followed shortly afterwards.
- On his return to Nottingham Sat took the Head Chef position at the Martins Arms in Colston Basset.
- He was then approached by the owners of the The Ashbourne Gallery in Derbyshire who wanted him to create a unique dining experience alongside serious works of art.
- The Roux Scholarship in 1999 won Sat the chance to work at the three Michelin-starred Restaurant Le Jardin de Sens in the south of France
- On his return he secured his Head Chefs position at the Hotel des Clos in Nottingham
- Hotel des Clos was re-launched and renamed Restaurant Sat Bains at Hotel des Clos in November 2002. By January 2003 he had gained Nottingham’s first ever Michelin star.
- Sat took over with his wife Amanda in May 2005 and they re-branded to Restaurant Sat Bains with Rooms.
Restaurant Sat Bains is one of the few establishments in the country to boast a ‘Tasting’ menu. This provides diners with a culinary journey through various courses of Taste, Texture and Temperature. An introduction to the style of cuisine at the Restaurant Sat Bains which won a prestigious Catey Award in 2003 for Best Restaurant Menu of the Year.
One of Sat’s philosophies is to give his guests something unique,
“Why bother coming to a restaurant and spending good money if you can do better at home.”
