The winner of The Roux Scholarship 2026 will have the choice between two star prizes

Since 2023, The Roux Scholarship has offered the choice of two star prizes for every winner, a stage in a three-star Michelin restaurant anywhere in the world for up to two months. Or, a bespoke programme of experiences to give winners an overview and insight into different chefs’ restaurants, and to visit producers and other artisans.

The Stage

The winner receives an invitation to cook and train under the supervision of a leading chef at a prestigious three-star Michelin restaurant anywhere in the world* (Britain included!) for up to two months. This is an extraordinary opportunity to work in one of the world’s most prestigious restaurants, with arrangements all made by The Roux Scholarship team). Previous winners have had the opportunity to learn about ingredients and mastered techniques they would never have had the chance to try in British restaurants, bringing back ideas, inspiration and skills that have helped develop their own cuisines and they have shared with their brigades. The stage also gives you the chance to live in such places Paris, New York City, Tokyo, California’s Napa Valley, Stockholm and Singapore for a short period of time (without the bother of finding and paying for accommodation), returning with a much deeper understanding of the cuisines in those places. They have used this opportunity to eat in the city or region’s other top restaurants, to discover more about other chefs’ cuisines too. Expenses such as flights and accommodation are all covered. Equally, winners with commitments at home can choose to do their stage in the UK. With eight three-star Michelin restaurants to choose from across the country, a winner may also choose to learn more about what the very best of British cuisine means at one of these restaurants. The total budget available is £12,000.

The Bespoke Training programme

The second option is the chance to put together a number of training opportunities tailored to the individual winner’s career goals and gaps in their skill set, to the total value of £12,000.  The winner will work with the Roux Family and The Roux Scholarship team to choose a list of up to six short educational experiences, visits and stays in the UK and a maximum of two abroad, to help their individual career development, including short stages at restaurants abroad*. We are grateful to Richard Bertinet who offers every Roux Scholar pursuing the bespoke programme a chance to learn about baking at Bertinet’s Kitchen in Bath. Winners may want to spend time learning about patisserie, or chocolate-making; they may be interested in fermentation or cheesemaking, wine-tasting or distilling. There might also be non-culinary skills that could be useful to a Roux Scholar: perhaps they would like to learn a language to facilitate a career move abroad; or perhaps they want to learn more about the business side of running a restaurant, or participate in a management course. These learning opportunities can be taken at convenient times in the chef’s work schedule within twelve months of winning The Roux Scholarship.

cash prize

The winner will receive £6,000 to spend on career development and educational opportunities. This could include meals at restaurants they’ve always been inspired by, it could be short training courses or it could be a trip to a region abroad that has a fascinating food culture and interesting producers.

The five other national finalists each receive £1,000 intended for similar experiences.

Mentorship award

An additional £6,000 will be awarded to the winner on completion of 15 months’ service with their employer following their win. The aim is to encourage the scholar to share with their brigade the new experiences, ideas and skills learned during their two-month stage in a three-Michelin star restaurant. Should they wish to leave their job within 15 months of winning, the £6,000 will be awarded to their employer to support the brigade’s development in other ways. Terms and conditions apply**.

A life as a Roux Scholar

All winners of the competition go on to enjoy a lifetime of support from The Roux Family and the family of Roux Scholars, a unique network of chefs and former chefs who are on hand to offer support, advice and comradeship to one another. This includes an invitation to the award ceremonies for subsequent competitions, and other special events. It also includes an invitation to take part in the Scholarship educational trips and other special trips, courtesy of our sponsors.

In addition, they will be signed up to receive the Total Wellbeing support package from Hospitality Action, which gives every Roux Scholar, and their immediate family, support for their mental health, financial and legal advice and many other benefits.

*Stage placements
Placement at international restaurants for stages depends on the chosen restaurant and other factors. International stages are subject to visa approval for the country in question and the venue’s agreement to host.

**The Mentorship Award
The Mentorship Award is provided at the complete discretion of the Board of Directors and will typically be granted automatically at the end of the 15 month period.  However the Award will be reviewed if:
1. The conduct of the Roux Scholarship winner during the 15 month period  from the date of the final could damage the reputation of the Competition or the Employer.
2. The employment did not extend for the full 15 months but this was not the fault or responsibility of the Roux Scholarship winner.
3. The nature of the employment did not allow the Roux Scholarship winner to mentor the same single team for the entire duration of the 15 month period.
