The great Cornish egg and spoon race
Egg, Set, Go!
On 3rd to 7th July 2023, our sponsors St Ewe Free Range Eggs will attempt to break a Guinness World Records title whilst raising £1m for crucial charities. The multi-award-winning free-range egg producer is encouraging the public to get involved to support them as their team attempts to carry an egg around 300 miles of the Cornish coast path.
The initiative, which is the brainchild of Cornish company St. Ewe Free Range Eggs, will use the record attempt to raise £1m for Hospitality Action and Cornwall Air Ambulance. The public is being encouraged to support the participants at the handover locations, dotted around the routes, as well as at the finish line, where there will be a celebration of the five- day attempt. A number of foodie pop-ups by the likes of Sam’s, The Corner Deli, Carnewas Tea Room and The Watering Hole will be positioned around each leg, in iconic locations such as Polkerris, Porthleven, Bedruthan and Perranporth, respectively.
The Great Cornish Egg and Spoon race will see individuals and businesses from across the Southwest and the UK joining in to support the two teams as they carry an egg along the Cornish coastline. The two teams; The Great Eggsplorers and Team Eggstreme, will race along the North and South coast to the Land’s End finish line.
As per the rules, the two spoons, which have been crafted specially by Dominic Pearce ‘The Cornish Woodsmith’, will hold our fresh, uncooked, St Ewe Free-range hen’s egg. The carrier of the egg and spoon will lead the teams across the rugged coastal path, with handover points where local businesses will be hosting foodie pop-ups, where the public are encouraged to come along to ‘egg-on’ the teams.
The event has already resonated with so many people and is being supported by high profile chefs such as Michel Roux Jr, who had his own mini-race to the front door of Le Gavroche.
Speaking about the importance of The Great Cornish Egg and Spoon Race, Bex Tonks, CEO of St Ewe Free Range Eggs commented: “We’ve chosen two incredible charities to support through this exciting initiative; Hospitality Action, who help the food and hospitality industries and another closer to home, Cornwall Air Ambulance, who carry out over 1,000 missions a year and are a lifeline for so many in the county.
We really want to raise awareness of how Cornwall is known for its thriving hospitality scene, however over the past few years, the region has been particularly impacted by challenges such as Covid and the cost-of-living crisis. The ever-popular tourist destination holds many untold stories of hardship and struggle the farming, food and hospitality industry has had to face in order to stay afloat. We’re looking forward to raising awareness, and money, through a light-hearted but competitive event, which we hope to see supporters at along the way, and as we cross the finish line!”
If The Great Cornish Egg and Spoon Race is awarded a Guinness World Records title, the presentation ceremony will be held at Rock Oyster Festival on Sunday 30th July 2023.
